Our Story

Our story began with Maker.

Four years ago, we started Maker, our private community for young founders who have reached $1M in revenue or funding, with the goal of bringing them together so they could help each other succeed. Today, Maker is home to 200+ founders who have collectively raised over $2 billion from firms like Sequoia, a16z, and Founders Fund.

We’ve watched members build billion-dollar companies, scale from a handful of people to hundreds, and navigate some of the hardest moments of building a company. Along the way, we’ve brought in founders like Marc Benioff, Whitney Wolfe Herd, and Bryan Johnson to share what they’ve learned.

Four years in, it hit us: something like this needs to exist for founders earlier in the journey.

The zero-to-one stage is one of the most formative for a founder. You’re building something from nothing, often with limited resources and few people around you who understand what that’s like. We’ve seen how much the right people in your corner can change your trajectory.

So we built Origin .

We're bringing everything we’ve learned from years of building Maker to founders at the start of their journey. We're particularly passionate about this stage because so much is still being figured out: not just what you’re building, but who you’re becoming.

Origin was co-founded by Matt Carley and Max Hellerstein, bringing together deep experience in both community and company building. Matt has built multiple highly curated communities for ambitious founders. Max has built and sold multiple venture-backed startups and raised $100M+ across his companies. We share a love for bringing great people together and supporting other founders.

We created what we would’ve wanted: a community where you can be surrounded by founders your age and learn from those a few steps ahead.

Our hope is that no young founder has to navigate zero-to-one alone, and that Origin helps them realize more of what they’re capable of.
